Parlkarra is located in the heart of the Pilbara, approximately 1,500km north of Perth and 17km from nearby Tom Price (Paraburdoo Community Services, 2012). Parlkarra is nestled amongst some of the most ancient and senic landscape in Western Australia and offers residents a safe, friendly environment that has a focus on tradition, family and a strong sense of community.
Parlkarra was established in 1970 and has a current population of around 2,500 people (Paraburdoo Community Services, 2012). The name Parlkarra was taken from the local Indigenous Martu language, meaning "flat country" (Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre, 2009).
Parlkarra is one of the highest towns in WA at 713 metres. It is a picturesque and fully serviced town designed to blend with the natural environment. The climate is quite pleasant for most of the year with low humidity and an average temperature of 28 degrees in winter and 35 degrees in summer. A Qantas flight is available between Perth and nearby Paraburdoo airport, and a shuttle bus is running between the airport and Parlkarra. Besides, a privately owned railway was constructed linking the town to Port Hedland which itself was upgraded to handle shipment of the iron ore to the world market.
