About the website
OurSchools is a website initated by the State Government of Western Australia and TimberTops School in the south west of Western Australia. It is a website that encourages interaction and collaboration between primary and secondary schools around Australia and over the world.
Based on Timbertops teaching rationale, students are given (supervised) control for maintaining and promoting the website and their schools homepage while practising curriculum objectives of safe internet usage and respect for others opinions. Through the self responsibility and encouragement from teachers, students build their self confidence and use problem solving stratergies to achieve success.
The main focus for the project is to use the unique locations of rural and remote schools worldwide, using its potential of fast communication to strengthen understanding between cultures, schools and communities. Instead of the isolation barrier felt within these schools, this website aims to harness this potential and encourage web-based and practical interactions between groups in the aim of peer learning and team building.
This is not to say that other groups or invidiuals are not welcome to share their opinions and ideas- but each contributor has their own responsibility in ensuring the information is respectful and identifiable.
OurSchools is a closed-group web community where invited members can create their own home page for their school and discuss projects, themes and ideas. These conversations are held in public viewing by all members of the community, so there is an expectation that when joining this group, you will be abiding to the terms and conditions outlined here
The following links are available for students and teachers:
Schools information- here each community who joins the website needs to share some information about their location and school structure. This helps stimulate ideas between groups and stand on equal footing as contributors to the website.
Ourschool forum- here is our message boards for schools to discuss ideas, issues and themes
Ourschool Chat- Members from each community meet here at 4pm Friday afternoons (WST) for live discussion and upcoming events and general issues
Ourschool also has a skype account: OpenSchoolWA which regulary corresponds with other school communities
Through the project, we hope to achieve these goals
To promote the sharing and collaboration of information with other similar or different schools
To encourage more students to build on ICT skills in a general preparation for future industries and communication
To gain perspective on their own location in comparison to others around the world, and how issues may be the same or different
To provide a strucutured and safe environment that promotes discussions with different groups of educators and students
To organise opportunities for schools to collaborate with others on similar themed programs, competitions and festivals
