Sophie is an art teacher who completed her practicum at Laverton School as a pre service teacher and was invited back for her first appointment. She was unsure whether to take the appointment due to the remote setting and a reluctance to leave family and friends in Perth. However, her enthusiasm and ability to adapt to the remote community and school setting has shown her she can practice flexibility and develop resilience. As a result, Sophie is establishing good relationships with students, parents, teachers and other staff. She visits Perth on some breaks, otherwise enjoys being part of community events, assists in curating local art shows at Red Town’s gallery and enjoys a good social life with other young teachers at the school.

Braeden is a maths major who graduated in 2010 and is on a scholarship contract for 2 years with Laverton School. He wants to move back to Perth as soon as his contract expires. While he enjoys the extracurricular activities like camping and 4WDriving, and is quite fond of Sophie, he is still does not feel settled in the community or satisfied with his work life. He is starting to become despondent due to not feeling he can make a difference with the attendance rate and academic achievement of his students. Many of his students are noticing he is becoming withdrawn, are assuming he will leave soon like so many others, and therefore are less engaged in the classroom.

Mike has been teaching for 26 years and has resided and taught in Red Town for 9 years predominantly as an English teacher and taking on many other disciplines throughout the years like woodwork and metalwork. Mike loves being immersed within the local community in which he feels valued and engaged. Mike loves being a part of the local footy team and has become on organiser of many festivities. He has encouraged many partnerships between government and community organisations and the school that benefit the whole community educationally, socially and emotionally. Furthermore, Mike has developed a community mentor program that links new teachers to community members giving novice teachers a better chance of transition and integration into the community and school.

joe.jpg

Joe came to Red Town to teach at Red School District High School in her second year teaching post graduation. She is now deputy principal of the school at 29 years of age and has been employed at the school for almost 3 years to date. The role of Deputy Principle is a position that none of her city counterparts have had the opportunity of gaining. She is completely professional within school hours and has made many positive changes including better student attendance and effective literacy programs. Sometimes however, she finds it challenging when she wants to let her hair down out of school hours, yet her extracurricular activities are often public knowledge and she needs to remain professional. Joe finds this a real challenge at times, yet she appreciates the opportunities at the school, her role in the community, and her friendships and relationships, so is careful not to have one beer too many down at the local.
