We all love our extracurricular activities, particularly in a geographically isolated area! The remoteness of Red Town region brings with it its advantages for outdoor action. Camping and 4WDriving are activities the young teachers of Red Town District High School often engage in. There is also a forever flowing rich social life with constant bbq’s and dinner parties that circulate amongst the teachers houses. A small group of teachers, students and community members have recently developed a photography group that meet up once a month and will hold an exhibition at the end of the year in Red Town gallery for anyone from the group that wishes to be involved. Teachers in Red Town often get involved in community events and enjoy organising sporting events and small festivals. It is a great way to engage with the students out of school hours and we do indeed often see improvements in the classroom as a result. Some of the teachers and I recently organised a wildflower festival with the local kids, with cooking, face painting and drawing. It was a delight to see some of the older local kids painting the faces of children. At the end of the day, the teachers headed out the road for a camping sesh under the stars. What great day! So the pre misconceptions of pre-service teachers ‘need not apply’ to the teachers in Red Town.
