The Detention Centre - Refugees / Asylum Seekers
In 2010, the Government relocated asylum seekers to a former mining camp near Red Town. While numbers in 2011 reduced due to the changes in policy, at the end of September, 72 unaccompanied teenage asylum seekers were sent to Red Town. The group consists of 14 to 17 year-olds. The teenagers started at school on the first day of term four. The school already has extra staff, including teachers of English as a second language, to cater for students. While there are many benefits to having students from the detention centre attend the school, it does create a great deal of uncertainty around future employment for staff due to the shifting government policies.
